Before finishing the book I decided to watch the movie in order to understand the story better. As I watched the movie for a second time  after finishing the book I noticed many things which have helped me understand more the message and symbols of the book. I can now say that F. Scott Fitzgerald is a GENIUS.

Once again the ending tore me apart and has almost brought me to tears. It is amazing how people with so much money, like Daisy and Tom, can just use some of their money to run away from their problems. Gatsby was innocent and he had to suffer the consequences.

While I watch the movie I annotated on the costumes used in The Great Gastby, I focused on the main characters mostly. The high and wealthy class lived on West and East Egg. Men wore suits, bows (sometimes ties), and hats. Women on the other hand, wore long dresses and excessive jewelry. If we compare the way Tom and Gatsby dressed (clean, suits, ties or bows and hats) vs. what Mr. Wilson wore, dirty shirts and baggy pants, we can clearly see who belongs to the high class. The cloths each character wore represented their social class. The more fancy your cloths the more money you had.

While Myrtle dressed with simple and cheap dresses, Daisy and Jordan wore expensive fancy dresses with tons of jewelry to make them stand out. This is why Mr. Wilson freak out when Myrtle had the pearls because only high people could afford them so it meant someone from the high class was giving them to her. During a casual day at her house Daisy used long and beautiful dresses which today people will only wear to elegant parties. She always had some type of jewelry, the amount depended where she went.

Additionally the clothing also gives, us the viewers, an idea in which time period the story takes place. In the 1920's people used to dress very elegantly. Women wore the flappy dresses and men suits. Also the bathing suits that Gatsby and different people wore at the parties certainly tells us that this movie doesn't take place in a current time frame.

REFLECTION: Photography Independent Project

2/26/2014

SCRIPT:
Why?

Photography has always been one of my passions. I have a Canon camera which I often use during my trips to do photography. Honestly I don't purse this passion as much as I would like so I decided that I wanted to focus this 5 months entirely on learning how to use my camera better so I could take advantage of everything it has.

How?
In order to know if I had learned how to use my camera in a manual setting and test what I learned during my classes I decided to create a project which demonstrated my learning through photos. I picked la culture chicha as my theme. One of my photography friends has always talked about how interesting this theme is due to the fact that is very visually attractive and cool and how it is major challenge because it's not very popular so it's hard to find and it is very weird so it's had to photograph.

By choosing this theme not only would I test my photography skills but I will serve the community by given Limeñan's and anyone who sees my pictures a look of this amazing culture.

Learned?
  • I learned how to use my camera in a manual setting how to combine ISO, shutter speed and aperture.
  • How to set your manipulate the setting to save your pictures to the highest quality so that you take advantage of your camera.
  • How to use photoshop to edit your pictures.

Learning about learning?
After every photography class we had different photography homework's and challenges we had to bring the next day. At the beginning of each class we should our pictures to everyone and got feedback. I learned that sometimes feedback can be hard but by having other people look at your photos you can learn a lot from they feedback and their perspective.

Also my classes were three hours long, it was hard to keep up at times since it was a long time. I learned that I learn better in short period of time because after a long class I was exhausted and I had to try very hard to stay attentive towards the last 45 minutes of the class.

Furthermore during the photography course we took field trips to Larcomar, at night, and Barranco, during the day. While doing these trips was testing everything that I had learned in class from the power points. I realized that after putting into practice what I learned in class it became more memorable to me and I understood it better.

Finally I learned that you don't have to every be ashamed of making mistakes. In photography the way you learn is by making the mistakes because then you know what you don't have to do.

Challenges?
I did have challenges along the way, I got very frustrated when I didn't get the pictures I envisioned. I had to learn how to manage this frustration and use it as a motivator to improve.
Also the classes where at night and they were very long so sometime it was hard for me to stay concentrated the entire class.

Storytelling through photography

2/26/2014

Today Ike, my photography teacher, told us a story about the IMPACT on photograph in his life. I realized how powerful photography can be and how it allows you to see the world in a different  p e r s p e c t i v e.

Ike wanted to use his photography skills to tell stories of some old people living in a retirement home. For this he lived six months in the retirement home where he got to know different people with different stories. Little by little he became closer to two of the
elderly which seemed very peculiar and had captivating stories.

Before doing the pictures he observed the man and the women closely to understand them better. He played, talked and spend the day with them to get to know their stories closer. He always feared he would become too attached since any day could be the last of any of the elderly living there.

Once he begun taking the pictures he captured specific details about the characters. He wanted to build two stories through photos which belong to each character (the man and the women) without saying who it is. He did not want to give away the character immediately so he photographed objects that symbolized and personified each person.

He created a story of 4-5 pictures of each character. These "stories" clearly tell about the daily life of the characters in the retirement home.  His pictures were very powerful and I could clearly tell that it meant a lot to him. His passion allowed him to experience something different and tell stories of amazing people.

So for todays class we had a free topic homework. Last class I had to take pictures of the pencils and I didn't like what they looked like. yes I learned a lot from my mistakes but I still wanted to get good pictures. So of this class I decided to photo shot my unicorn and colored sugar in a white paper. The same concept of last class homework but with the difference that I wanted to tell a story and I wanted to take great pictures.

The unicorn pictures ended up beign a great success. They really transmitted what I had in mind and I liked how I've designed more the object and played with it to create a cool composition. Some of them are missing a little bit of light, I could have increased the ISO. Sometimes I am afraid of the grain and this is why I keep it as low as possible. Soon I will learn to use photoshop so I will learn how to add more light and brighten up these pictures more.

Everyone in my class liked the unicorn pictures.  They gave me very positive and constructive feedback. What really made this pictures outstanding was that they were original; they where not the typical beach photo shot, instead they were portraying something from my imagination. It was an interesting theme to explore maybe I'll consider it for my final project I have to present.

What I love about these pictures is how I have played with the focus, it helps me bring the public attention to wherever I want, it also adds a cool effects. I will practice more with the unicorn, as I mentioned it was original and attractive since it was something different.

"The only way to learn is by making the mistakes"

As we started the class Ike, my teacher, told us to show him the pictures we had taken for homework. Many of the people in my class begun to complain saying that it was very hard and that the pictures they had takes had come out white, black or out of focused. The only thing Ike answered was good, try again. In the beginning I was very confused I would of thought he would have taught each one what they did wrong. Instead he gave us 10 minutes to go outside and take more pictures applying the little things we had learned last class.

When I came back I was a little frustrated because I still didn't understand how the aperture worked or how to combine it with the shutter speed to create the best exposure. Happily, I was not the only one having problems, everyone was stressed.

Ike told us that the only way we were going to learn ow to combine the ISO, APERTURE and SHUTTER SPEED.  As we make the mistakes and understand the errors little by little we will learn how to combine them and then it will come automatically.

Many people are scared to fail and make mistakes but really this is the only way of learning.  I will admit I was frustrated and stressed at the beginning because I didn't get the shots I wanted. I did get very bad pictures but like this I was able to learn better how to manage my camera and the lights.

The task was to take 3 pictures of a pencil in a white paper applying everything we learned from ISO, APERTURE, SHUTTER SPEED, white lights, shadows and focus. I didn't like the pictures I took of the pencil so I am planning to repeat this homework, now that I understand more the tools in my caera I can play more with the pencil and worry less about the light.

MY AMERICAN DREAM

2/3/2014

At the end of this year I will be applying to college but I still don't have a clear idea of where I want to go or what I want to do with my life.  Before even thinking about my DREAM university I need to understand my personality and know what I like to do.  Without a clear career in mind or what I like to do I am lost without direction.

 |FINDING MY CAREER|

Before researching careers I took some personality test which allowed figure my strengths and weaknesses better and understand who I am and where I would be good at.

After doing the personality quizzes I realized what are my strengths, weaknesses and the kind of person that I am. However, I wasn't able to tell my perfect career after evaluating the quizzes. This is why I wrote down the thing that I like to do with my free time, jobs I know about that I like and subjects in school I enjoy and I'm good at.
Once I was done I realized that I realized that most of the things I likes connected to a business career. So far, in the Innovation Academy we've been working on many business skills and studding topics that are studied in business careers such as marketing and finance. I have enjoyed the content in the semester a lot and I am very interested in that area. For now I think that I going towards the business area, I don't know exactly where I want to specialize, marketing, finance, accounting, entrepreneurship, but I do know that this is a career I enjoy and once I have a little bit of everything in college I'll know what area of business is my best fit.

#MYAMERICANDREAM

Now that I know towards what career I am heading, business, I have to find my DREAM college which fits what I want to study and the the of environment I like.

My DEFINITION of a dream college

Honesty I can dream about going to Harvard since is the best business school but for me my dream colleges have to be realistic. I have to put all the cards on the table in order to figure out my options. I need to see what I have in order to know what I can achieve. #Let's be real.

The criterion for my DREAM SCHOOL(S) are the following:

FIRST CLASS

Today I had my first class at el Centro de la Imagen.  When I arrived I sat down in the classroom and waited until it begun. I was very intimidated because every person that walked through the door was 25+, everyone worked. In the beginning because I thought I had chosen the wrong class, maybe too advanced, everyone much older than I and had professional cameras which made me think that they were professionals. However once the class started and we introduced ourselves I realized that not one person had experience they all had bought big, professional cameras to get in the class. This was a great relief for me. I was once step ahead since I've already had experience with the camera therefore I wasn't intimidated anymore.

Once the class started we learned a little bit about the history of photography. Honestly I wasn't up for the theory behind it but it ended up beign very interesting. I had no idea photography begun with art, when painters created dark rooms with a hole for light to go through and then copy an object.
After learning the theory we learned the three most basic things in manual mode.

ISO - APERTURE - SHUTTER SPEED

ISO

Picture
Picture

HIGH ISO = NIGHT
LOW ISO = DAY (100-200 max)

THE HIGHER THE ISO THE GRAINIER THE PICTURE

*The first thing that you change to adjust the light is the ISO.

Picture

APERTURE

Picture
Picture
Picture

CLOSED = LESS LIGHT

MEDIUM = LITTLE LIGHT

OPEN = A LOT OF LIGHT

*The smaller the aperture the more closed the lens and more detail that will be shown.
The wider the aperture, the more open the lens and the more blur.

Picture

SHUTTER SPEED

Picture
Picture

FAST shutter speed = people in ACTION

SLOW shutter speed = people NOT in ACTION

FAST shutter speed = A LOT of light

SLOW shutter speed = LITTLE light

Picture
After reviewing the basics the class was almost over. We discussed the homework which was to take pictures figuring out the perfect ISO, APERTURE and SHUTTER SPEED.
