The Casa Gourmet experience

After training with Willy and Barreto in December and talking to the client, Claudia Carrión, I finally attended the first photo shot of the food for the franchise book Claudia wants to make. Sadly, I wasn't able to attend the first session since I was on vacation so I didn't know the client as well as Barreto.

We got to Casa Gourmet early in the morning; I helped Barreto set up the lights and the mini studio before Claudia got there. Once everything was ready many desserts were brought into the room, it was impossible not to stare or be provoked by this delightful treats. Once Claudia got there we begun the photo shoot.

We begun with a Quiche, if you know how a quiche looks like it is very simple, there is not much decoration. However Claudia was very meticulous about every detail and decoration, she wanted that the Quiche looked outstanding, so we had to get the angle with no cracks or burns and we had to add some oil to give it glitter and make it more provocative. As I watched her work and listen to her thought in the first two photos I begun to know her better and better and I was able to understand what she wanted the pictures to be like.  There were many small details such as burns, dirty spots in the plate or crumbs that she realized and changed so we could retake the photo. So the first thing I learned about our client was that to her small details matter, she is a perfectionist.  Therefore Barreto and I had to watch out for those small details that we knew she was aware of so that we didn't have to retake the pictures many times and loose time.

Furthermore as the photo shoot went by I also realized that she really wanted her food to look provocative and inviting. Therefore we had to take the best angle of each dessert to make it look DELICIOUS and MOUTH WATERING. To do this we either added oil to make it shinier or tried different angles to take the best profile of every dish. After looking at all those pictures in the screen I couldn't resist my craving to dig in.

During today's session I learned the importance of listening and knowing your client. The better you know your client and his goals the easier and better you will met his expectations.  As I understood Claudia more and more I was able to take pictures that she fell in love. Yes, 3-4 of my pictures were approved by her, my first day and already took 3 pictures for her book!

-Even in his house he dresses elegant
-Soldier suit: doesn't let you know if you are rich or poor, it neutralizes what Gatsby really was so Daisy didn't know if eh had money or not

Mytrle:
-Classic dress, not as fancy as the ones form high class woman

High Class Women:

-They combine a lot of cloths
-Short hair

Now he has Daisy so the green light has no more value

Daisy: american dream, how far we go and loose just to get that happiness or materialism

Ostentatious —> Gatsby for Daisy showing off of wealth

The valley of Ashes

Tom made fun of Gatsby because of the Pink suit—> lots of money no class, to dress

West and East Egg and Valley of Ashes —>

Cathartic—> purge negative emotions (get them out)

Daisy —> shallow American Dream

America —> from poor to rich

Money has value because we have given it value

No intrinsic value

Money is a veichle to get food or these things

Before finishing the book I decided to watch the movie in order to understand the story better. As I watched the movie for a second time after finishing the book I notice many things which have helped me understand more the message and symbols of the book. Once again the ending has almost brought me to tears It is amazing how people with so much money, Like Daisy and Tom, can just pay and run away from their problems. Gatsby was innocent and he had to suffer the consequences.

While I watch the movie I annotated on the costumes used in The Great Gastby, I focused on the main characters. The high and wealthy class lived on West and East Egg. Men wore suits, mainly bows and hats and women wore long dresses and excessive jewelry. If we compare the way Tom and Gatsby dressed with clean, suits, ties or bows and hats vs. what Mr. Wilson wore, dirty shirts and baggy pants, we can clearly see who belongs to the high class. The cloths each character wore represented their social class. The more fancy your cloths the more money you had.

While Myrtle dressed with simple and cheap dresses, Daisy and Jordan wore expensive fancy dresses with tons of jewelry to make them stand out. During a casual day at her house Daisy used long and beautiful dresses which today people will only were to elegant parties. She always had some type of jewelry, the amount depended where she went.

El Pan de la Chola

Today I interviewed Jonathan Day, owner of El Pan de la Chola. If you haven't been there it is worth a visit because he has a recipe out of this world. Jonathan prepares break like no other bakery does. He is a master in the kitchen.

I was very nervous to interview the owner of the BEST bakery in Lima, honestly he seems like a very busy man and I felt privileged to get an interview with him. At 8:30 am I arrived to his small shop in La Mar and asked a waiter for him. As he approached my table he was very confused to meet with a 17 year old, he probably expected an older journalist. Jonathan was very kind and down to earth man. The way he told his story so passionately and detailed captivated me and kept me ongoing on the conversation. It was a wonderful experience talking to someone who is so passionate about what he does.

Is this really what I want to do?

It's been a week since I finished my driving classes and I feel I have already met my goal. After thinking and talking to my friends about the independent project I have realized that this is not what I want my independent project to be.  I think that in the end of the semester there was a misunderstanding, in my part, about the concept of this project.  I choose something that I wasn't truly passionate about or extremely proud of to do. I see the value on doing driving lessons. I have a purpose, a why, but I don't think that this is something I want to pursue as an independent project.

The independent project is more about something you've always wanted to do, a project you design yourself, it has a purpose and a product that you are excited and proud to produce. Now that I am clear about the independent project I realized that if I am dedicating so much time in a project I want to make something I am proud and passionate about.

I was thinking about different things I like and things I've wanted to do so I could expand and deign a project. So I thought about maybe doing a photography internship or independent project. For the past semester I've been very engaged in photography and I feel that this project will give me the opportunity to grow as a photographer and learn more skills.  I've set up a meeting with Gabriel Barreto tomorrow so I could brainstorm with him for project ideas or internship since he is experienced in the field and has contacts, he will be a great mentor. Tomorrow I'll figure out everything and have a better project.

LAST class: Learning how to PARK

After an entire week today was my last driving lesson. I never expected to learn so much in a week like I did; I can proudly say that I with only 5 lessons I have learned how to drive and park a manual car. I am going to miss my classes, I was looking towards them everyday. It was actually fun to go out and learn to drive in real avenues with real cars driving around. My instructor was very good, he had experience thus he knew exactly how to teach how drive and help new students gain confidence in a car. I think that my success in this classes in a way is thank to the instructor, he was calm and every time I made a mistake he made me think of possible things I could do wrong before actually telling me my error. I don’t know why but I’ll miss driving a manual car, I know many people hate it but I kind of like it. I am so glad I learned to drive, honestly I though it was going to take me longer than this week of classes, my parents did as well.

In this last class I learned how to park horizontal and diagonally. I drove down to the Costa Verde where we found a parking lot right next to the beach to begin the lesson. When we got there my teacher came down from the car, I was a little scared since I had never been alone in the car while driving, having someone with me gives me a bit more confidence. So he took some cones and sticks from the back of the car and set them on the floor imitating cars parked on a horizontal parking area. First he guided me through the steps giving me reference points from the sticks. Then it was my turn to do it all alone.
Picture

Picture
Horizontal Parking:

1.     Put the car horizontal, parallel to the other cars and parking space.

2.     Have a small distance between the cars and your car.

3.     Advance in 1st transmission until the second stick is in the last piece of the right window.

4.     Spin the stirring wheel completely to the right and go backwards until you can see the stick (car) in the middle of the back left window.

5.     Spin the stirring wheel completely to the left and go backwards until the car is strait.

6.     Set the stirring wheel strait so the wheels park correctly, advance in 1st transmission until the car is perfectly parked.

My first trail was not a complete success but it wasn’t a failure, it was pretty good. The in my second I parked perfectly but coming out was a fail since I was going to much backwards. In my third try I did the parking perfectly and the coming out much better. Finally in my fourth try I already did the parking and coming out excellent. It was easier than what it seemed.

Then I tried the diagonal parking. Liso took the cones and sticks and placed them in a way that he imitated a diagonal parking space and cars parked in a diagonal way. This seemed a little more complicated since I had to do it all at once, without stopping.

Diagonal Parking:

1.     Advance forward in 1st transmission until the first car is in the end of the right mirror.

2.     Without stopping spin completely to the right, once you are in put the stirring wheel straight to park strait.

It seemed harder than the horizontal parking but it ended up being very easy. This one I master it in my second shot, going in was simple if you use a easy going velocity and going out id the exact same thing only that going backwards. In just 30 minutes I had learn two ways to park which usually take the full lesson. My teacher was very impressed and proud; I can say I am a natural (hahaha).

This week was very cool I learned something I thought it was going to take me more time. I have figured out now which are my strengths and weaknesses so now I know what I need to practice the next three weeks. I also have to finish the online course and learn the automatic car with my driver.

If you are driving in Lima don't think it too much just do it!

If have experienced driving in Lima you know that it is very dangerous.  Driving in Lima is like driving without rules. In one side it can be a pro that I am learning to drive here in Lima, since I will be confronted to many situations and imprudent drivers thus I will learn the hard way and in other places it will be easier for me to drive. However, it can also be considered as a con because it can be very dangerous since I am an inexperienced driver.

In this past days that I have driven around I have realized that it is not only that people don't follow the rules but they are disrespectful, even with people trying to cross the street. You only watch and think for yourself because the car next to you can do any move in any minute.  You may think he is going to go strait but the next second he goes in your rail in front of you. It is very weird how Peruvians say how hard it is to get the drivers license here since the test is very strict and then when you are on the road you see people driving terribly.

Learning to drive in Lima this past days has taught me a few things about how to survive in the streets in Peru. For starters, always be sure about where you are going and what are your moves. If you are not sure of what you want then you have a problem, the cars won't wait for you if you want to turn, turn because as soon as a car comes it won't stop! Then, it has also reached me to never be scared, if you are scared then you'll start getting stressed and driving bad. To survive you have to be 100% in control of the car, knowing you dominate it and be sure of yourself otherwise like pirañas the other cars will eat you alive on the road. Nobody pities. Thirdly I've learned that handling the wheel correctly and keeping your car in your lane is very important. For some reason people are always in a rush so in order to stay aways from accidents keep your lane and let the busy people pass you by.

When you are confident about yourself you can always do whatever you set yourself up to

Today was my second class I was ready to receive some instructions and then go down to la Costa Verde little by little.  As soon as I saw my teacher down stairs he handed me the key and told me to start the car. I was shocked, honestly I didn't feel very confident or capable of starting the car and drive down to the Costa Verde like if I do it regularly.

He closed the door and turned on the air; I put on the key, started the car and brought down the hand brake. There were no cars so I drove through Ugarte Moscoso and turned to get out to Salaverry. Before taking the hardest way immediately, going down the Costa Verde, he first told me to drive through the Miraflores malecon so that I would get familiar with more cars around me, stoping and advancing in traffic and traffic lights.

During my first light in Salaverry the clutch got me before I stepped on the accelerator and the car turned off. Meaning that the clutch came up too fast before I accelerated and this caused the car to turn off. When this happened I got very stressed because the cars started to beep at me and the people beside me would scream.  But I focused on myself and not on the other people and I asked my instructor why that happened, he would tell me my mistake and what to do so it didn't happen again. Once I knew exactly what I was doing wrong I begun to get more confidence in myself because I already knew what was wrong so I evade it. Little things like this came up along the way, and little by little I begun to realize what are some mistakes I repeat why they happen and how to evade them and this is how I got more and more confident. Once you know how the car works exactly it gives you so much comfort, you never doubt or are insecure about anything because you know it all.
Picture
However I was confident driving the car but I was still not confident about the cars driving next to me. You can never know what will be the others cars move, you can only trust yourself because you only have control of your own car. Like I mentioned previously, before going immediately down the Costa Verde we were going to drive through the malecon so I would get more confident. At the beginning I drove slow but once I got the hang of the speed, moves and behavior of the other cars I got more comfortable driving on open streets and avenues. During the entire ride I repeated to myself that I was in control and I knew exactly how to do the manual transmissions, accelerate and stop. This also helped me gain confidence, it erased all the doubt and insecurities in my mind and allow me to flow. The calmer I was the better I performed because just like in a test if you stress out you forget everything and freakout when inside you really know all the answers.
Picture
Picture
The more confident you are the better you will drive because if you are not confident and you are insecure of turning or doing different moves you can end up crashing. This is why when you are about to do something you have to be completely sure about it or not because you can cause an accident. The more confident you are on yourself the more sure you'll be of your instincts.

First class and already driving on the streets

1/8/2014

Today was my first driving lesson and 30 minutes before the class started I was freaking out.  First and BIGGEST reason was because I had NEVER drove a car, nor to try or just for fun, simply NEVER. Second I barely knew about automatic cars and when I did the research for manual cars I did get a thing so I was very scared I was going to suck at it. Thirdly I was just nervous about the class, I had no idea how it was going to go or work I just knew that at 12:00 pm I had to wait downstairs for the pickup. Finally I didn't know what teacher was I going to get, unlike other classes these are individual classes so I was scared what type of teacher was I going to get.
🚙   🚘    🚗   🚙   🚘   🚗   🚙    🚘   🚗   🚙   🚘   🚗
At 12:00 pm I went downstairs, in the corner of my building I saw a guy, probably 30-35 years old, standing in his green shirt with the logo of the academy, Mario Hart, and a red who had printed on the logo of the academy. Probably it was to warn other people that the driver in that was learning, in other word STAY AWAY.

I met my instructor, he asked me if I knew anything about how the car works or how to drive a manual car, two things I was freaking out about thirty minutes ago. I was completely honest and told him that I had an idea but nothing clear. So we begun from 0, I sat in the front seat and he sat in the driving seat. he first explained me everything inside the car. From the mileage to the directionals (kilometraje haste las direccionales).

PANELS AND BUTTONS
1. Lever Windshield: Clean the glass and if you push the lever to shoot in water also helps clean the windshield.

2. Lever of directional or lights:
Upwards indicates you are turning left and downwards indicates you are turning right.

3. Speed Meter: Indicates the velocity you are traveling at.

4. Gas Meter: Indicates how much gas is left in the car.
Picture
PEDALS
1. Accelerator: It allows us to accelerate the speed you want and always be in a suitable transmission

2. Brake: It allows us to stop the car. It is important to always press the clutch before braking, otherwise the car will shut down.

3. Clutch: Treading the clutch allows us to make changes in the manual transmissions which help us  increase the speed of the car. It is necessary to keep the clutch pressed to the maximum when a change is made.
Picture
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Picture
R- backwards
1- Slow
2- Faster
3- Even Faster (roads)
4- Highway
5- Rocky terrain
BRAKE
Picture
Used when you are parking the car. Once it's up the car is not allowed to move.
STEERING WHEEL
Picture
Used to give direction to the car, to go straight or curve.
After I was clear on the different inside parts of the car he taught me some basic skills.

1. How to move my hands over the stirring wheel so that I don't loose control over the car.
2. How to change the manual transmissions. First hit the clutch and then make the change.
3. ALWAYS look at the three mirrors.
4. How I know if all the mirrors are positioned well.
5. How to stop, first the clutch and then the break.
6. How to act in stop signs🚦, go neutral and then to first.
7. When to use the lever of directional.

So with this basic knowledge I drove around the park which is right beside my house. We went around many many times and with every round I was getting better at making the manual transmissions. My instructor was impressed by how well I could handle the wheel and how fast I had learned. So after 30 minutes of going around he told me that since he saw I was so confident and had learned well that we could go leave the park and go somewhere close.

While I was going around in the park I was not scared of all, everything seemed pretty easy. What scared me out the most of leaving the park was that I was going to confront cars, so I had to be very focused, fast and I couldn't make a mistake because and accident could happen.

So we left the park and drove to Salaverry. If you have been there you know that this street has many cars. So before I made the turn I had to watch for the cars that came speeding like jets to the stop light. Once I managed to pass I stopped in the light. Everything seemed calm until the light turned green and I messed up and the car turned off. It was very scary because the cars were moving and many where mad but we managed to turn it on and get the green light. After this mistake I had my total concentration, we drove through Pezet and Portillo and then back to my house through El Ejercito.

During this short trip I did some mistakes but I managed to correct them because I knew exactly what I was doing wrong. It was only my first class and I was already driving on the streets, my instructor was very proud of me. I am a fast learner. What I think helped me learn so fast was that I was completely relaxed, no nerves or stress and that I was pretty confident on myself. It was a great class and I loved it. I can't wait for tomorrow when I'll be driving to Miraflores.
